What is Mental Health? Why is it important?

One's Mental Health is extremely crucial, as it dictates not only how one perceives the world, but also themselves.

"Caring about and maintaining our mental health is as important as our physical health. We only have one brain and one body, so it’s our job to keep it running in the best way we can by paying attention to and working to improve our mental and physical health.
We seem to know more about our bodies than we do our minds. This website is designed to share information about mental health and provide you with resources that can help you understand your mental health and assist those you care about.
Use the tools, resources, events and engagement tools to improve mental health literacy in your community and help change the conversation."

In 2011, Queen's University was struck with the tragedy of numerous consecutive suicides. The school was able to combat this problem through spreading information about Mental Health.

"Traditional approaches to tackling the issue of mental health in Canada rarely reach outside the 1 in 5 Canadians who are affected by mental illness. Jack.org’s programs are designed reach all young people, the 5 in 5. We encourage and enable young people to better care for themselves and support their peers.

We have a laser focus on ways to draw in individuals and communities that have traditionally been very difficult to reach. We believe that the inclusiveness of our outreach strategy will shatter the stigma and will lead to real and substantial long-term change.

At Jack.org, our vision is “No More Silence” on the subject of mental health. A nation where all youth in our target demographic are somehow touched by Jack.org or what our initiative represents, and where we will see a reduction in youth suicide, and increased wellbeing of Canada’s young people.

In short, we want to save and improve the lives of young people."

Depression is one of the most common Mental Health issues, affecting millions of people worldwide.

"Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being. People with depressed mood can feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, ashamed or restless. They may lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details or making decisions, and may contemplate, attempt or commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, aches, pains, digestive problems or reduced energy may also be present. Depressed mood is a feature of some psychiatric syndromes such as major depressive disorder, but it may also be a normal reaction to life events such as grief, a symptom of some bodily ailments or a side effect of some drugs and medical treatments."
